Term Reflection

Overall, I really enjoyed this class. I knew that we would be learning about STDs and AIDS, but honestly I never expected to learn as much as I did. This topic is one that almost everyone can relate to, which makes it easier to both learn and comprehend. Starting from the beginning of the course, I think we could've learned less about public health and the generic topics. Instead maybe provide just a class or two about that, then just jump into the STDs. STDs are very important to learn especially here on a college campus. Most people have received at least a little bit of education on this topic, but this class was a great reminder of all the symptoms and what each one actually is. It would be helpful though, if we were able to see more pictures. Personally, I'm a visual learner.

Learning about AIDS/HIV really opened my eyes to how important this disease is globally. I never really thought about it affecting me, but now I am totally more aware. The biology part of learning how the virus replicates was hard for me to focus on. If there was another way to teach this section other then just on powerpoint, I think that would be extremely helpful. But I do think it is an important concept to understand.

Another highlight of the class was learning the past studies, Tearoom Trade and Tuskegee. I now understand why people cannot trust the government and why certain laws are in place.

  1. I also really like learning about the Tuskegee study. It was interesting to me how big this study was for america and I have never heard about it before this class. I think that this topic should be taught me in schools.

  2. I also thought the Tuskegee study was interesting. I had no idea that people were treated like that in the past, and how I take the right to know what kind of study I am participating in for granted. I have to remind my self that people did not always have this right to know what they are getting them selves into.
